RISE Campaign

On the occasion of first anniversary of the brutal gang-rape of para-medical girl in capital Delhi, MAVA had organized a special city-wide Campaign called 'RISE' on 16th Dec., 2013.

As a part of the Campaign, over 3500 students from 30 colleges and youth bodies took part in public rallies, held simultaneously, in around 25 key spots spread across Mumbai. Several shows of a Street-play ‘De Dhakka’ (Give a Blow) were put up by youth leaders who had collectively scripted the play, covering various forms of violence on girls and the practical measures that can be taken by youths to address the issue. Around 60-80 trained volunteers at each of the spots were proactively engaging the passers-by through conversations, holding of placards with creatively designed messages, distribution of thousands of pamphlets to lay people spreading message on the concrete role that could be played by vigilant citizens to address gender-based violence at an individual and societal level. A series of posters appealing to youths, men and women were splashed across the city a week before the Rise Campaign.

In the evening, around 2000 youths gathered at Kirti College Grounds as a mark of solidarity, pledging support to uphold the rights of women safety and dignity. A panel discussion held on the occasion had key personalities including Sadanand Date, the then Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order), Mumbai, psychiatrist Dr. Harish Shetty, Advocate Flavia Agnes and Vishnu Magare, Principal, Kirti College, sharing valuable insights and guidance on preventing violence on women.

The Departments of National Service Scheme (NSS) and Women Development Cell (WDC) of the Mumbai University had lent their valuable support in appealing students and Faculty from all affiliated colleges to join the Campaign. The Mumbai Traffic Authorities and Police had also contributed significantly towards smooth conduct of this MAVA’s notable event, memories of which will linger among Mumbaikars for long time.

The whole event was a befitting tribute to the girl Nirbhaya by the teeming youths through concerted collective action.
